Call in the Energy Advisors
If you notice your bill is higher than usual, [company name removed*] will send an energy advisor to your home free of charge to check things out.
This appeared in an article released by an energy company in America. On the face of it, it seems to be innocent enough; however, the target for most companies is to get customers tied in for the long term.
While the [very short] article sets out to get the customer to contact the energy company if they are struggling to pay their bill, why would the home owners’ energy bill suddenly leap into a "higher than usual" bill?
- Estimated energy reading
- Incorrect meter reading
- Using something new
- It’s colder outside (heating)
- It’s warmer outside (cooling)
I can’t think of anything that would give a sudden rise in fuel consumption, winter heating will be more than summer, where air-conditioning has been installed summer will make greater use of it. Unless you have bought something you didn’t have before, there should be no un-usual rise in fuel use.
Whilst I can only applaud the sentiment to get an energy advisor to visit a property, caution would appear to be the key word; an advisor can only offer advice if they have no other agenda than to give sound advice to a client, an independent advisor is therefore your best option, one employed by an energy company or manufacturer of heating or cooling appliances is tied to that company.
